Charlie was the original choice to play Snake Plissken with Tommy Lee Jones second. John Carpenter reportedly decided against Charlie because he thought he was too old by the time they got around to filming. At the time Kurt Russell was a surprise casting choice, having been associated mostly with Walt Disney films. Russell reportedly came up with the hoarse Clint Eastwood whisper as an homage to co-star Lee Van Cleef's spaghetti westerns with Clint. Interesting that a young Russell co-starred with Charlie in "Travels of Jamie McPheeters", so maybe some of Charlie did end up coming through in Snake.

i remember seeing a picture of Kurt with Charlie in the mid sixties, when Kurt was a little kid. I believe it was on that T.V. episode.

I've heard that casting story before. It is too bad Carpenter couldn't have made that film maybe 5 years earlier. Bronson would have added an interesting depth to the role and he would be remembered for years by SF fanboys for this film.

In 1997 Charles Bronson gave an award to Kurt Russell at the Blockbuster Awards.
The video was once on youtube but it was deleted a little later.
Kurt Russell received the award for best actor in an action movie for his role in "Executive Decision".
Russell said on stage: Well, that´s worth it. 34 years ago Charles Bronson and I made a television series and I haven´t seen him in those 34 years.
Then he gave Bronson a hug.
Bronson didn´t feel comfortable during the hug. Probably he didn´t like it to being hugged.
When Bronson and Russell did the TV show, Russell was a little boy.

Man, makes me wonder if Charlie even remembers the series! Ha! Ha! That might be the reason why that hug was so strange.
