I liked him a lot in The Departed but I can't say he has impressed me much since then, although Shooter was OK. But he is missing something I just can't put my finger on it.

I see what you are saying arthurbishop. That IT factor is a very important, component to have, to make a impact in the industry.

Agree he doesn't have the "presence" of Bronson, but to be fair to Wahlberg he's been in the media's eye since his teenage years and maybe could use a little more weathering before we come to a conclusion. Still think of him being wet behind the ears despite the violence associated with his youth as Marky Mark. We didn't really start seeing Bronson until he was already a man and served in the Army.
Wahlberg also comes across as a little on the short side, but he's probably in Charlie's height range. Still, if encountering Wahlberg in a dark alley, I'd take my chances. Charlie, maybe after he'd turned 70. Maybe. Or 75.
"The Departed" was solid. Haven't been that impressed by Wahlberg's other films, but a lot of that might simply be today's style of movie.

Yea maybe it is today's movie style, also a lot of actors haven't exactly had to go to war or work in the coal mines, usually quite the opposite. Although I think most people will disagree, a new actor who has the IT factor is Josh Brolin, that's my opinion anyway. What do you guys think of Brolin as a movie toughguy?

Liked Brolin in "No Country for Old Men" and did make note of him in a few other things over previous years, but don't know that he's in Bronson territory.
Here's a guy who is a few years older than some of the others we've been discussing: James Remar. He's had some leads and does a lot of character stuff, quite similar to the progress of Charlie's career. Very good at playing bad guys. Interesting that he got his start for Walter Hill in "The Warriors", "The Long Riders", and "48 Hrs." He made a great cocky tough guy in "The Warriors" and was one of the 80's best villains in "48 Hrs.". Maybe he should hightail it to Europe right about now ...

I like Remar in pretty much everything i've seen him in, he's a pretty distinctive actor. I've gotta find The Long Riders, so I can see him in different movies. By the way when I mentioned Brolin I wasn't trying to say he was in Bronson's league just as close as I think a modern star has got. But I think most of the guys we've mentioned on this topic so far, are as close as anyone has gotten so far.

I've always felt that Steven Seagal was the Bronson of our time, note the "was." Between 1988-2001 he made some awesome movies and often played someone that was out for revenge. He looked like he meant business, much more of a bad-ass than most action stars can say.
I personally dislike the hell out of Statham, IMO he has pretty much zero charisma and his movies simply stink C-grade. Don't get me started on Vin Diesel...

I think Statham has zero charisma too but... comparing Seagal with Charlie is blasphemy, my man. There are some similarities in characters and plots of these too but that's all

Yeah, I wasn't comparing them as persons, just the way many of their movies go. Them wanting revenge and kicking some serious bad-guy ass.

I liked Segal from1988-1997 when when he was really trim. He had a really unique fighing style that , made him stand out from the rest of the other action stars.

I wouldn't go that far. Sure, he's old, fit and make action movies, but I don't think their personas, on and off-screen are very similar.
