I have the Jerry Vermilye book THE FILMS OF CHARLES BRONSON and there is a still from YOU CAN'T WIN 'EM ALL where a shirtless Charlie is holding a gun and grabbing Tony Curtis. Always thought Charlie's right nipple/chest looked kind of odd in that photo but when seeing the movie again in the past year didn't pay attention to it. Figured the still was just an odd angle or movement that drew attention to something that wasn't noticeable in "real time".
So, was Charlie taking or trying steroids during this period? Who knows. Charlie was never one to immerse himself in the gym culture. Most of his workouts were said to be freehand or done in his own backyard with his homemade weights and functional equipment.
We've often discussed on this forum how muscular Charlie was in the 1950's before the emergence of steroids and how fit he remained on screen for over 30 years. Don't remember ever thinking in movies like HARD TIMES where he's shirtless throughout (and in his early 50's) that his body showed evidence of roids.
It's possible that while in Europe during the late 60's Charlie might have been training in gyms and been given "something" to try by the locals. Perhaps Charlie did a cycle or two, muttered something under his breath about "bitch tits", and discontinued the use. Of course, evidence of any experimentation may show up on screen for knowledgeable eyes to find.
Can't dispute though that Charlie's physique was a combination of years of dedicated exercise and strict dieting. He wasn't one of these actors who got huge and ripped for a single film and then immediately lost that build. Charlie was overwhelmingly ripped and natural for decades.

Yes, from my vantage point to CHANEY, Charlie trained yearound. I don;t know too much about the steroid stuff, but wouldn't be surprised if Charlie experimented for alittle bit, because steroids was still obscure around the late 60's.

We can't say for sure if he ever had any taste of steroids or not. However the fact is that he was very big, cut and ripped during 50's and he never got any better than that.He had almost the same body until 80's. He was gradually losing tiny amounts of muscle mass decade by decade as it's normal.I mean he never got bigger from one movie to another. He would probably have that physique either he had tried steroids or not.

Charles Bronson was always muscular. You can watch an early 'prison movie' he was in with Broderick Crawford and Lon Chaney Jr. (name escapes me) and he is ripped with full natural testosterone in his muscles. His performance at 54? in Hard Times shows a physique parred down a bit with diet and lots of muscle endurance exercise. I can see it in his pecs and shoulders. He obviously knew the importance of staying lean. I am 57 and have been a fan of CB since I was a cadet at West Point. I have been in shape since I was 14 and have been in the fitness industry since 1985, so I have a little insight into the process. Diet is 80% of looking good. Blessings to all.

Despite the "advantages" Charles had a physique that was still as equal in many ways. His shoulders and arms were cut and ripped and hard. His symmetry was as good as it gets in any time frame. His physique is still better than 95 percent of todays physique by far. And he was strong!

When Googling "Charles Bronson steroids", the only place on the whole web that even discusses this issue seems to be this forum. I highly doubt Bronson ever used steroids, it seems like something he would find beneath him, like he didn't need that crap to look good, having had the body and discipline he had for so long.
If he did use, and that's a big if, it must have been during a very short period of time, because signs of steroid use would be of abundance and the subject would be more widely discussed than it currently is. Just look at him in Hard Times when he's shirtless for over half of the movie, no one seems to spot any signs of it there and that's several years after the the examples mentioned previously in the thread. Better yet, check out Chato's Land, even less years had passed after this supposed discovery.

I just read more about this bitch tits subject. Apparently once you have it, you can't get it out of you unless you go under the knife (operation.) Again, if Charlie tried it on and got bitch tits as a result, I'm 100% sure he never touched the stuff again. Having a facelift or two is one thing, but going under the knife for a case of bitch tits, I'm sure the saying "Once is enough" would have suited Bronson pretty well.

Hello..just to make a comparison on William Smith physique..looking at him on larado..looking muscular but still much smaller than William Smith in the early 70s ..starting with his neck much thicker and wider..his upper body was much more muscular..and his chicken legs were bigger as well...remember this change was just a few years apart...just watch larado..then watch anything in the seventies...a good example is the movie piranha piranha...he is huge...that blue shirt would not fit the larado actor....great example?

Fantastic comparison...in jest..I'm sure many actors have used steroids...it became a dirty word because of abuse...but safer than smoking...which i believe William Smith did as well...he smokes in his movies....it wasn't called for him too smoke in his films...I'm a pharmaceutical expert..pharmacist..plus i use myself...so i have an eye for this..i hope i didn't ruin any fans way of looking at the actor...her is alive and well...God bless..

I've seen photos of Bronson as a boxer in a 50's movie, and his physique is very impressive. Stallone in "Rocky III" had a very similar physique to him in "Chatos land" aswell.
