Do you remember where did you read/heard that? This could be true judging from some moves he did in his movies but it would be almost impossible for such a popular global star to keep that secret. An impresive flying kick that he obviously did without stunt-man.

I've never heard of Charlie training in Kenpo before or having a belt. I agree it would be hard to keep that a secret. I've seen lists of the celebrities that Ed Parker, the main kenpo man in Hollywood trained, and I've never seen Charlie included.
I do have the "Black Belt" mag in question and there's little mention of Charlie in the actual article. It's mostly about Tak Kubota and Hank Hamilton, the actual martial artists involved with making THE MECHANIC. Charlie on the cover is just a teaser.
I do recall a "People Magazine" though from the time of DEATH WISH that had photos of Charlie kicking a karate bag in his backyard. I've seen that photo on line, so it's out there somewhere. Will try to track it down.

Back in the day, I read an interview with him where he mentioned martial arts as part of his work out routine. They had a picture of him doing a kick on a heavy bag. He has a brief scene in the mechanic where he is doing martial arts in a dojo and is doing his own work. Didn't look like a black belt so much as practiced for the scene. Apparently, he was a pretty good boxer and had done a fair amount of that in his youth. He also worked as muscle for a Chicago gang for a brief period before going into the service. He was the real deal. I've never heard of Charlie training in Kenpo before or having a belt. I agree it would be hard to keep that a secret.
