He could have at least been "Mr. Blue" -- the part played by Eddie Bunker in "Reservoir Dogs" but I don't know if he would have wanted such a small role and I doubt the producers could have matched his salary since it was already a pretty low-budget film. But hell, look at "Indian Runner" -- Bronson made that for Sean Penn and he was in what, two scenes? I think by this time, with Jill Ireland dead he just didn't care anymore.

I think they are remaking The Mechanic this year? It has already been filmed and it's gonna be released in 2011.Statham plays Arthur Bishop. That's the most ridiculous think I've ever heard.Just watch the video I mentioned in my previous post and try to imagine Statham in that part...really bad choice.

That's true, the movie looks terrible. You can find the trailer on youtube, my worst fears came true that this movie would basically be turned into a john woo movie. I like Jason Statham and I really don't think he's the problem. They should have either: never touched this movie, or make it exactly like the original.

A solid action thriller starring Charles Bronson as an aging hitman. This movie is very typical of the kind that were made back in the 70's, with more focus being put on suspense rather than action. They did a good job of portraying the routines of a hitman, it was interesting and well made. There's a pretty amazing motorcycle chase scene in the middle of the movie that needs to be seen.
The movie has its flaws though. For one, I think they rushed the apprentice part, or they just didn't write that part as good as they could have. He had been teaching him for a way too short amount of time for his apprentice to be given the "go" to kill his very own, much, much more experienced teacher.
As for the end, I thought the very last scene was pretty cool, but I didn't like the fact that Bronson's character was foolish enough to get himself killed once their mission was over, when he knew he was going to be next in line. IMO the ending would have been better if he'd somehow known he was going to get killed by poison and faked getting poisoned, then surprised the apprentice when he'd gotten home again, by blowing his brains out.
Anyone, good luck to Jason Statham in trying to carry Bronson's jockstrap. He'll need it.

That's interesting, I'd love to see it if it's really available.

There is an alternate ending to this movie in which after JM Vincent get blown up, Bronson appears and walks to the water's edge, grabs his gear, pushes the boat out onto the lake, You hear JM Vincent's recording and the boat blows up, Bronson walks away in the "sunset"

Is it available anywhere on the net?

I found this on moviechat.org It appears that Michael Winner didn't actually film any alternate endings Taken from website: "He dies. The rumours of there being an alternate ending (with Bronson's character surviving) are simply an urban myth. Director Michael Winner always corrected this widely believed untruth when people asked him about it. Winner insisted that he only ever shot one ending, and that's the ending we have. The point is that Arthur Bishop knew he was going to die. He knew that his employers had ordered it. He let Steve kill him. It was part of Bishop's philosophical fatalism - he accepts (and in a way welcomes) the inevitability of his own death. He's tired of his job and tired of living. Death doesn't frighten him at all. He rigged Steve's death before they left for Europe, knowing that Steve would kill him as soon as the 'assignment' was over. Bishop accepts his own death, but also rids the world of a sadistic degenerate psychopath (which is essentially what Steve is) by posthumously terminating his former apprentice. Poetic justice." moviechat.org/tt0068931/The-Mechanic/58c72dc55ec57f0478f41ec2/Understanding-the-ending

They only recently renovated the 3rd and Broadway location of Bishop's first kill, sans dialogue. For forty five years the blown up hotel actually sat there boarded up on prime LA real estate. Converted to restaurants now.
