Director:J. Lee Thompson Writer(s):Víctor Andrés Catena, Jaime Comas Gil,Morton S. Fine, Milton S. Gelman, James Granby Hunter Actors:Charles Bronson,Domonique Sanda, Jason Robards, Fernando Ray
From a movie with Charles Bronson, Fernando Ray and Jason Robards you would expect something more interesting. This movie is not that good, it's a little boring and the few action looks like 40's kind of action.

I agree, even the title tries to get a " CASABLANCA" kind of feeling. But it is boring, complicated, and Dominique Sanda is no Ingrid Bergman. It's the last film where Bronson looks slim, but he doesn't try very hard to create an interesting character. Seing him with Jason Robards, is just proof that Leone was a genius with actors. None of the chemistry survives here.

You are Right crego, he turned sixty a year later, so that made it harder to stay lean, so his weight kind of yo-yo'd throughout the eighties, but he did look real lean in "The Evil That Men Do", 'Murphy's Law", Death wish 4", and Death Hunt". Age is a bitch, but Charlie fought it better than anybody I ever knew.

It must be the last movie he completely takes off his shirt (he's also seen half-shirtless in "Death Wish 3").

Yeah, this movie does seem to mark an end of an era, because he didn't take his shirt off much at all in the eighties, and Charlie probably knew that he wasn't as lean, as past decades.

If Bronson hadn't insisted upon using that hack director J. Lee Thompson it could have been a much better movie. It's too bad he didn't try to get better directors for his later films. Pieces of this film were kinda interesting but in the end it just came up like some kind of third-rate "Casablanca" knockoff...

I've tried three times to watch this movie, but each time I only get halfway through before I turn it off. It's not romantic, it's not action packed. It's just boring.

I forget if someone posted it in this forum but on Youtube there is a little "behind the scenes" featurette on this film. You see Bronson with Robards. A far cry from their film with Sergio Leone!

I like the moment, at the end of a night shooting, when Bronson and Robards go away together, like two old friends. It's quite moving to see this, so many years after.

I hate to post on this thread since it's not the most popular Bronson film and it's over a year old, but I have to write about how much I love this movie. It's my favorite Bronson and J. Lee Thompson film. I think people were expecting a 'Casablanca meets Death Wish' kind of film with a solid cast. It's a drama and I think that's why people don't like this film. Bronson was given a chance to act this time and he really could act. And there were many memorable characters in this movie as well. Read this review I found on-line. This guy really nails the great aspects of "Caboblanco." www.dvdcult.com/rev_CaboBlanco.htm

I agree with most people in this thread, the biggest problem of the movie is that it was just boring. I think it's Bronson's worst movie of the 80's along with Assassination. I didn't find it awful, but with Bronson and Robards as the leading men you expect better quality. The ending was pretty anti-climactic, a better finale could have saved the movie a little, but they really dropped the ball on that one. Agreed on Dominique Sanda, she was pretty terrible here. I don't agree about the chemistry between Bronson and Robards though, I especially liked their scene at Beckdorff's house in the beginning of the movie, with a good exchange which ends like this: Gifford Hoyt: I don't want that girl to die here like the Englishman.Gunther Beckdorff: How can I be responsible, whether she lives or dies? Death comes to us all, Giff, at one time or another. And to die in Caboblanco, well... there's always that colorful cemetery on the beach.Gifford Hoyt: I'm glad you think it's colorful. Because if anything does happen to that girl... rest in peace. Classic Bronson!
