I think Hill was referring to Charlie's lack of bodyfat and his overall muscular appearance when he said he was in good condition. He also may have been speaking of the speed and reflexes Charlie still displayed. The problem was that being a smoker Charlie ran out of breath after short bursts of strenuous activity (hence, his stamina).

Thanks CHANEY! I was just amazed that he said after 30, or 40 seconds, Charlie would be worn out. I thought all that working out, could deflect the affects of smoking, to some degree.

To some degree. One has to take into account how taxing boxing is, thowing punches and trying to avoid being hit at the same time. A traditional 12-round fight is really only 36 minutes of activity with a one-minute break every three, but there's no comparison to that and say jogging on the treadmill at a steady pace for 3 to 4 miles which a lot of reasonably fit people can do. Not many people can step into the boxing ring and go all-out for more than a couple of minutes before getting gassed.
In Charlie's case on HARD TIMES you have to think that these scenes were being shot over and over again all day to the point of exhaustion to get the proper angles and choreography. That final fight with Nick Dimitri reportedly took a week to film, so it's believable that Charlie would be running on fumes for a lot of it (as say would a man 30 years younger than him).

I agree CHANEY, about that. I used to run on a treadmill at home, until a few months ago, and started running outside for five miles a day, and their is a BIG difference between the two!
