Thought I'd put Robert Ryan up for discussion as well. He was one of the most versatile tough guys of his era, able to play both dark villains and able-bodied heroes and anti-heroes with equal skill in both westerns and classic noir. He was a college boxing champion and reportedly everyone in Hollywood knew not to mess with him. Very well liked by all those he worked with.

I just read his bio, and he had a very distinguished career. I remember TCM having him being star of the month, which was rare for a character actor. I am aware of his tough guy exploits. He backed down John Wayne, and SAM Peckinpah off camera, just too name a few.

An unforgettable "serious, and few words man" kind of tough guy, really charismatic.
