Actress Peggy Stewart played Charlie's wife in the HAVE GUN - WILL TRAVEL episode "The Outlaw" in 1957. She was interviewed by writer David Rothel for the book "Richard Boone: A Knight Without Armor in a Savage Land". Following is her memory of that episode and Charlie:
David Rothel (DR): Do you have any special recollections of doing "The Outlaw" episode {September 21, 1957}? It was shot , you may remember, up in Lone Pine, California.
Peggy Stewart (PS): My recollections are really on Charley {Bronson}, I would say. People ask me about Bronson, you know.
DR: Well, tell me about working with Charles Bronson on that episode.
PS: We were in Lone Pine doing that episode, and I had gone out to Alabama Hills there, and the assistant director pointed me to the dressing room to get into wardrobe, and so I did. They had a little couch in there, so I was lying down on that and looking over the script. Suddenly I heard footsteps coming up the steps; I looked up and there was Charley Bronson. I had never met him, but I could tell from his demeanor that he didn't want to be bothered. So I didn't say anything, and he came on in and sat down at a dressing table with his back to me. Pretty soon he turned to me and in his deep voice said,"I'm Lithuanian." I looked up from the script and I said, "Oh, well, good." He turned back around and about three minutes later this same deep voice said, "I worked the coal mines when I was eight." I said, "Oh, good." Thank goodness the assistant director came and said it was time for us to go to work. Well, we went on and did our little thing {the scenes}, and he never exchanged another word with me except our dialogue in the script.
When I was finished with my scenes, I knew Dick was going to be sending me back to Los Angeles, so I went over and gave Dick a hug and said, "I'll see you back in town." He said, "Okay. Aren't you going to say goodbye to your husband {Bronson in the script}? I said, "I haven't even said hello yet!" (laugh)
So, about a year and a half later, I got a call from Metro, and they were going to shoot a pilot called THE ATTORNEYS. There were to be two couples: Patricia Berry and Cameron Mitchell were one couple and the other was to be Charley Bronson and me. They wanted me to play his wife, so I said fine.
There we were on Metro's back lot; it was night shooting. I saw Charley coming down the street as I was headed for make-up. So I cheerfully said, "Charley," and I started to say my name, and he just nodded and walked on by. We went in and did our scenes, and it's the same routine: No hello, no goodbye, no nothing! (laugh)
Now, about twenty-five, twenty-eight years later, I'm at the Golden Boot Awards, and Andy Fennady is a good friend of my husband and myself. Andy's table was a tier down from us, so I went down to say hello to Andy and Mary Francis {his wife}. Well, Charley Bronson was sitting at his table. So Andy said to me, "Do you know Charley Bronson?" I looked at him and I said, "I don't believe so!" (laugh) So he introduced us! (laugh) I tell people, "Yes, I played Charley Bronson's wife twice." Then they ask, "What do you know about him?" I say, "Nothing!"
DR: A few years ago Ben Johnson said about the same thing: "Well, he might not say hello to you in the morning when he shows up on the set, but he'll know his lines and he'll do a good job."
PS: That he'll do! But my Charley Bronson encounter was the biggest experience that I remember out of that HAVE GUN episode.

What a story. So strange. I wonder if deep down he was an intensely shy man?

Anyone know how he got along with Robert Shaw on Battle of the Bulge? Or Steve McQueen?

He and Steve Mcqueen were great friends (same with Lee Marvin and Chuck Conners). This is told by Harriot Bronson in her book, "Charlie and me" by Harriot Bronson, written last year, Steve and Charlie were friends for many years. If you have not read the book yet, please do. A very good read!
