Stars:Charles Bronson, Will Sampson, Jack Warden Director:J. Lee Thompson Writer:Richard Sale This is Bronson's last -but not least- western.During the whole movie there is a malinchonic mood and a feel of the impact of the ravages of time.As Leone had said about "Once Upon A Time In The West": "The rythm of the film was intended to create the sensation of the last gasps that a person takes just before dying".With that movie Leone wanted to symbolise the death of the western. In "The White Buffalo" someone feels like he just heard the very last gasp of the genre. J. Lee Thompson creates a disturbing and claustrophobic atmosphere of agony.John Barry's soundrack fits the movie perfectly. The most interesting thing of the film is the relationship between Bronson's and Sampson's characters.Jack Warden proves once more that he's a superb characther actor. This is a very good movie but it left me a sense of unsatisfaction. Don't expect a westerned "Jaws", it is more an allegoric western like "High Plains Drifter" or "Chatos Land".

I like this movie but unfortunately we are living in a modern world and cant appreciate the special affects back then. You can clearly see the tracks beneath the buffalo in the snow and alot of things look cheap.

Yea, this is a good movie. My son and a few friends of his watched it about a year ago and they even liked it. It just has a good story line.

Anyone know if the Australian, UK & American DVD's of this are uncut? There's a Czech DVD on Amazon that says it's "UNCUT" and is 98 minutes long, whereas the other versions has it listed at 97 minutes.
I'd really like to know before I make my purchase.

I finally got to see this after avoiding it for years; really the only Bronson film I hadn't seen that he made in the 70's. Everything I read about it kept saying it was among the worst movies ever made, or words to that effect.
Well, I have to say that overall I kind of enjoyed it. It's not a good movie - but it's a lot closer to being one than reviews would have you expect. The first hour has some poor, rambling scenes that aren't gripping at all, but the last half-hour or so has a really nice mood. The special effects (i.e. the Buffalo itself) are pretty fake looking, but so what? It's fine if you don't think about it, and since the part is different for Bronson (and as always he's excellent in a non-showy way), it doesn't matter now after almost 40 years.
I wouldn't necessarily recommend this to anyone but someone like me who was starved for a Bronson film he hadn't seen, but thanks to the last 30 minutes one could do worse IMO.

This was like a wet dream come true for me. Ever since I was a kid, I've loved these man vs. wild movies, where a group of characters are faced against unusually large animal/s or bug/s. My favorite is Jaws, of course, but I enjoy a great deal of them and collect them. I have quite a few. So to have one of my favorite actors appear in one of these movies was really something else to me, especially when it's in a western setting! I enjoyed this movie from beginning to end and do not agree with a lot of other people that say it's bad or even worse. I felt that the pacing was good, it was funny at times (intentionally so), it had some nice shootouts and I really liked the white buffalo look and sound. The atmosphere was at times very eerie, almost scary, I thought that helped the movie a lot. To accompany the eerie atmosphere was John Barry's terrific score, he really did a great job with this one! It reminded me a little bit of his Oscar winning work on Dances with Wolves. I'll never forget the opening scene! Talk about setting the mood for the movie. I think the ending was pretty underwhelming though. It felt a bit rushed and not quite as epic (by 70's standards) as it should have. I thought the showdown would have involved Bronson more than it did. I'd give this a 7 or 8/10 rating with a repeat viewing factor that is very high. I like this movie but unfortunately we are living in a modern world and cant appreciate the special affects back then. You can clearly see the tracks beneath the buffalo in the snow and alot of things look cheap. Speak for yourself, I loved the look of the buffalo! I much prefer these practical effects over today's fake looking CGI.

I much prefer these practical effects over today's fake looking CGI. I agree, a longer, more intense and suspenceful showdown would have make the climax more powerful. I totally agree with you about the movie's special effects, I also prefer them over cgi...
