Bronson was a gifted actor.Whenever he worked with great directors he made great stuff when he didn't he made rubbish.
SERGIO LEONE was the greatest director. He was the ideal director, the only one who used all of Bronson's brilliance the right way.Bronson gave a perfect performance in "Once Upon A Time In The West" thanks to him.Bronson never managed to reach that level again.
RICHARD FLEISHER was really great. He made only one movie with him but it was enough.I think "Mr. Majestyk" is Bronson's most exciting movie from 70's.The action was very well filmed.
WALTER HILL made really good job in "Hard Times".Chaney and Speed were the most interesting characters Hill created in his whole career.Chaney was an Harmonica kind of bare-knuckles boxer. What makes the movie so special though is the fight scenes. The fights in "Hard Times" are possibly the best choreographed fights in every movie released before 90's.
MICHAEL WINNER made some really great movies but they could have been even better.I think "Chato's Land" was his best. I also love "Death Wish".His movies didn't have much action. He preferred short and sudden action in his movies, like Sergio Leone. It was not the action his weapon. He was perfect in creating a cold, "dead" disturbingly silent atmosphere. He did that in "Chato's Land", "The Mechanic" "Death Wish", "Death Wish II".In "Death Wish 3" he completely fckd up.This movie could have great and breath-taking action but it was so boring and lazily made.(I've not seen "The Stone Killer")
J. LEE THOMPSON was like Bronson:Getting worse with age.He made some classics ("Cape Fear", "Guns Of Navarrone" "The Greek Tycoon") but he got tired.I love "The Evil That Men Do", when I saw it I felt that Thompson could have made really great stuff with Bronson if he had worked with him in early 70's.I also love "Murphy's Law" it worked very well, it was fast, entertaining and had good action. Some of his movies though like "caboblanco" were too bad.
