I remember it was released in January 1994, but it didn't reach a theater near me until April, about two weeks before it came to video.

Bronson got 5 million bucks whereas the budget started out as a million. Golan then pulled some more budget cuts. Pancho Kohner was to produce and J. Lee Thompson was set to direct.
Basically, the budget was that of an independent film...less then a million.

Foreign and video sales were big at that time and a lot were probably pre-sold thanks to the Bronson name. To get the film into theaters for a week or two was just a formality to say it was a theatrical release and give it some sheen and gloss. Golan probably made his money back and then some before the movie was ever seen in a theater.

Later in Golan's career, he was pretty much aiming only for Foreign and video sales. He noted that the Death Wish movies were popular rentals and on pay-per-view almost every time he decided to produce another.
