It's been said Charlie liked John Garfield and envisioned himself playing Garfield-type leads even though he was initially typed as a character player and muscular thug. Turner Classics show a lot of Garfield films and wonder what others think of Garfield. He was a charismatic actor and built on a similar height and frame to Charlie, but nowhere near as muscled though he was perceived as being more handsomely featured. It's interesting that Charlie identified himself with Garfield and leading man roles when everyone else saw him differently. Is anyone else here familiar with Garfield and could you see a young Charlie doing his roles from the 40's? Garfield was only 39 when he died of a heart attack in the early 1950's.
