Bronson was 53 when he finally became a bankable star in the U.S. Maybe it was a bit too late. He had already done hundreds of films and TV episodes, and surely didn't have the ambition and drive of a younger man. It's possible that he had bad taste, too. After all, he said "THE GODFATHER" was (quote) "The worst film I've ever seen".

I guess so... Except for Bronson's fee, it looked pretty cheap !

Very good ideas all around... It proves only one thing, I guess : Bronson was a great character, but he made poor choices, and his career as a star is a big let down. Sad, because I think that after the success of "DEATH WISH", he could have made another american career, and choose ambitious films, but he prefered "BREAKOUT" or "ST. IVES" or "WHITE BUFFALO". His only really good film in the mid-seventies was "HARD TIMES", but it was not a big hit. What a waste...

In "TWINKY", Bronson hits a New York cop, to help his wife. He does time, and she comes to see him in jail.

I think it's an invention. But Bronson was in jail in "MY 6 CONVICTS", "BIG HOUSE U.S.A.", "WHEN HELL BROKE LOOSE", "THE GREAT ESCAPE" (of course), "TWINKY", "VALACHI PAPERS", "FROM NOON TILL THREE", "DEATH WISH III"...

Not that I know, but "YOU'RE IN THE NAVY NOW" and "ONE STEP BEYOND" are easy to find on DVD.

It's the only film that uses the space Bronson had between his teeth, in his youth. He spits water on his harmonica player pal, on the beach.

Lots of times : "YOU'RE IN THE NAVY NOW", "TENNESSEE CHAMP", "OFF LIMITS", "KID GALAHAD" (ex-boxer), and on TV : "ROY ROGERS SHOW", "WINCHELL FILES", "THE DOCTOR", "CRUSADER", "JOE PALOOKA", "PLAYHOUSE 90" (episode "NO TIME AT ALL"), "ONE STEP BEYOND", he boxes several times in "MAN WITH A CAMERA" too. Others, I'm sure...

I just read Michael Winner's book. It's very gossipy, quite funny, but frustrating : almost nothing about the actual work with the stars, about filmmaking in the seventies... There's a great anecdote though, involving Bronson, his first wife Harriet, his then mistress Jill Ireland, and a vacuum cleaner.

I like the moment, at the end of a night shooting, when Bronson and Robards go away together, like two old friends. It's quite moving to see this, so many years after.

I'm answering to myself : I just received the DVDs and "BUTCH CASSIDY" is not in it. But there's an episode with Steve McQueen, one with Lee Van Cleef, another with Chuck Connors... Not bad !

In "CHATO'S LAND", it's Bronson who jumps from the hill, but another guy who lands on Richard Jordan's horse. Even with his helmet on, the guy on the motorcycle in "THE MECHANIC" is obviously not Bronson. The worst and most recognizable stuntmen are in "ASSASSINATION" : you clearly see their faces !

Bronson's stardom lasted only two years in the U.S. from "DEATH WISH" to "HARD TIMES". After that, it was a way down, until he started to make only exploitation movies for Cannon. He was a huge star in Europe, and mostly in France, because of Leone's film and "RIDER ON THE RAIN", "RED SUN", etc. That's why europeans and americans don't have the same image of Bronson. "DEATH WISH" wasn't such a big success in Europe.
